Grünwege is an independent walking route planner. It is not an official Berlin city application.

The green network

The map uses all 20 Grüne Hauptwege from Berlin’s official WFS open-data service, listed as updated on 1 May 2026 and retrieved on 7 September 2026. Source: Senatsverwaltung für Mobilität, Verkehr, Klimaschutz und Umwelt / Geoportal Berlin. The WFS dataset is published under Datenlizenz Deutschland – Zero – Version 2.0.

These are the WFS open-data geometries. The separate GPX/KML downloads have different published usage terms. The app does not use those files.

How the route is chosen

The planner searches the connected pedestrian network. Green-route membership is estimated by comparing each walking segment with the official lines, allowing up to 12 metres of alignment difference. That classification does not create new connections. Bridges, intersections, and connections must already exist in OpenStreetMap.

The planner first calculates the shortest mapped walk, then compares routes with increasing penalties for distance outside the green network. It selects a candidate that reduces travel outside that network while staying within your extra-distance limit. This is a practical preference algorithm; it does not claim to find the mathematically highest possible green percentage among every path.

Start and destination points may be moved up to 60 metres to the nearest mapped path. Larger gaps are rejected. Any adjustment over 10 metres is shown with the result; access from the original selected location is not verified or included in the walking distance.

Green routes sometimes include ordinary streets. “On green routes” means matched to Berlin’s designated network; it does not measure trees, shade, traffic, or actual vegetation.

Coverage and current limitations

• Routing covers the largest connected walking network in the Berlin extract. Some isolated paths, islands, and sections outside Berlin are unavailable, even when an official green line is visible there.
• Only connections recorded in the map data are used. Explicit foot restrictions, private access, certain barriers, unbuilt paths, and pedestrian one-way directions are handled conservatively.
• Opening hours and changing access conditions are not evaluated by time of day. Gates or conditional access can trigger a notice. The app has no live closure feed.
• Accessibility preferences can avoid mapped steps and uncertain access. Surface, slope and wheelchair information remain incomplete and are marked where available.
• Walking times assume 4.5 km/h and exclude rests, crossing waits, and surface or elevation adjustments.
• Place, stop and address coverage depends on OpenStreetMap. Where a search does not find the intended place, choose a point on the map.
• Guidance follows the foreground browser location and recalculates after a 75 m deviation; it does not provide spoken directions or background tracking. Reports are prepared for manual review and never change routing automatically.

Privacy and map display

Route calculation, place search, and address search run in your browser. Your selected start, destination, and location are not submitted to an external routing or search service. Location is requested only when you tap “Use my location”.

The background map loads visible tiles from OpenStreetMap using normal browser caching. Tile requests reveal the viewed map area and usual network information to that service; see the OSMF privacy policy and tile usage policy. The app does not download map tiles for offline use. Fonts load from Google Fonts. Hosted access is managed by ChatGPT Sites.
